Sorrowless Tree - Asoka - Diya Rath Mal
Saraca asoca, also known as ashoka tree, is an evergreen flowering plant of the Leguminosae family. It is also referred to by many other names including the sorrowless tree, Ashoka tree, Sita Ashok and Ashogam tree. This species is native to Sri Lanka, India and adjacent areas of Southeast Asia. It is a popular ornamental plant and is also used in herbal medicine, considered as the 'tree of no sorrow', the plant has various medicinal properties and is used in Ayurvedic remedies for ailments especially common in women. This plant can be found naturally in the wild and gardens of the country. However, the Ashoka tree has been flagged as Vulnerable as per the wildlife and flora conservation status of Sri Lanka.
The Ashoka tree is a sacred tree and is worshiped in some countries of the Indian subcontinent. Also according to Mahayana Buddhism Queen Maha Maya gave birth to Prince Sidhu who became Buddha under this tree, but according to Theravada Buddhist tradition it should be the Sala tree.
