Plant Name - Hibiscus
Physical description
Mandrinet
Mandrinet (Hibiscus fragilis) is an endangered shrub in Mauritius.
Hibiscus
A hibiscus flower bears pollen on the stamens (male structure), pistil (female structure). This unusual arrangement is common among members of the Malvaceae family.
Leaves are often lobed and smooth or covered with trichomes (plant hairs). Flowers may be borne singly or in clusters, and in most species flowers last only one day. Epicalyx (the whorl of leaf-like bracts surrounding the sepals) is particularly common, and the stamens are usually united into a tube. Members of this genus characteristically have prickly anthers and their fruits are capsules.
Major species
Chinese hibiscus
Flowering Chinese hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis).
Tropical Chinese hibiscus, or rose of China (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), can reach a height of 4.5 m (15 ft), rarely exceeding 2 m (6.5 ft) in cultivation. It is grown for its large, slightly bell-shaped flowers. Cultivated varieties have red, white, yellow or orange flowers. East African hibiscus (H. schizopetalus), a drooping shrub with deeply lobed red petals, is often grown indoors in hanging baskets.
Other members of the Hibiscus genus include the fiber plants mahoe (H. tiliaceus), kenaf (H. cannabinus) and roselle (H. sabdariffa), rose of Sharon (H. syriacus) and many flowering plants by common names. Malluma.
